Getting Started
PopQuizzer is a party music quiz for iPhone and iPad. One player hosts using Spotify, everyone else joins from their own phone, and there's no account or backend server involved — just guess the artist, song, or year before your friends do.
Host picks a game mode
Tap Host a Game and choose Timeline (place songs in chronological order as they play) or Bingo (mark off a bingo card of songs and artists). Then connect Spotify and pick a playlist.
Everyone else joins nearby
Other players tap Join a Game to find the host over Wi-Fi or Bluetooth. No account is needed to join — just Game Center, so everyone has a name to play under.
Play through Spotify
The host's device plays music out loud through Spotify while every player's phone shows the current round, submits guesses, and keeps score live.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need Spotify Premium?
Only the host needs a Spotify Premium account, and Spotify installed and signed in on the device that's playing music out loud. Players who are joining don't need Spotify at all — Game Center is enough.
Do I need Game Center?
Joining a game uses Game Center to give you a display name other players can see. Hosting doesn't require Game Center — only Spotify.
Why can't other players find my game?
Nearby-player discovery uses Apple's local networking (Bluetooth and Wi-Fi), so make sure PopQuizzer has both Bluetooth and Local Network permission in Settings, and that every device is on the same Wi-Fi network as the host.
What's the difference between Timeline and Bingo?
In Timeline, you build a chronological timeline by guessing where each new song fits by release year. In Bingo, you mark cells on a bingo card as the matching song or artist plays.
Do players need an internet connection?
The host needs an internet connection to stream from Spotify. Players joining nearby connect directly to the host over Bluetooth or local Wi-Fi and don't need their own internet connection.
Where does the music come from?
From the host's own Spotify library and playlists, played through the Spotify app on the host's device. PopQuizzer doesn't stream or store any music itself.
Troubleshooting
-
Players can't find the host's game
Check that PopQuizzer has Bluetooth and Local Network permission under Settings → PopQuizzer on every device, that all devices are on the same Wi-Fi network, and that the host hasn't already started the round.
-
Playback is silent or won't start
Hosting requires Spotify Premium and the Spotify app to be able to play out loud on the host's device — check it isn't only routed to headphones or another player's AirPods. Make sure Spotify is installed and you're signed in when connecting.
-
A player got disconnected mid-game
Background and reopen PopQuizzer on the disconnected device to try reconnecting to the same game. If that doesn't work, the host may need to restart the game.
-
Game Center keeps asking me to sign in
Sign in to Game Center directly from Settings → Game Center, then reopen PopQuizzer.
